Voters of Richmond
3 Ways to Vote in 2020
Many changes have been made in 2020 to make it easier for you to vote. With choice, it becomes more complicated. You need to plan your vote now. There are three ways you can cast your ballot in Virginia…
- SHOW UP at your polling place on November 3rd between 6:00am and 7:00pm. You can find your polling location and check your registration status (Are you registered at your current address?) on the new Citizen Portal of the Virginia Department of Elections at https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation.
- VOTE EARLY at the registrar’s office or one of the new Satellite Voting Centers. The laws changed in 2020 to allow voters to vote up to 45 days before the election without an absentee excuse. Voters in Richmond City can cast their ballot in person at any one of these locations
- Registrar’s Office (new location) at 2134 West Laburnum Avenue, Richmond 23227 from September 18 to October 31, M-F 8 to 5, and Saturdays, Oct. 24, and Oct. 31 from 9 to 5.
- Satellite Centers from Oct. 24 through Oct. 31 M-F 8 to 5, Saturdays 9-5.
- City Hall, 900 East Broad, Richmond 23219
- Hickory Hill Community Center, 3000 East Belt Blvd., Richmond 23234
Parking is plentiful at the Laburnum Avenue and Belt Boulevard locations. City Hall has great bus access. Pick the location that is most convenient. You can avoid the crowds of election day by voting early.
- MAIL IN your ballot. Ballots postmarked by Tuesday, November 3rd and received by noon on Friday, November 6th, will be counted. Due to expected high volume and possible delays in postal service, if you are going to use this method (the safest during the pandemic) you should:
- Request your ballot NOW at the Citizen Portal (it is called “Apply to Vote Absentee by Mail”). Ballots will start being mailed to voters who requested them in mid-September. You can request a ballot up to 5:00pm on Friday, October 23rd but should do it as soon as possible.
- As soon as you get your ballot, complete it, reading carefully all the instructions concerning signatures and postage, and mail it back as instructed.
REGISTERED? Deadline to register to vote, or update an existing registration, is Tuesday, October 13, 2020. You can register or update your registration on the Citizen Portal if you have a current DMV issued license. Be sure to bring identification to the polls or voting centers. This year a photo ID is not necessary. The list of acceptable IDs is found at https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/in-person-voting/.
Let us have a great turnout in Richmond this year!
